Wally joined the Navy Nov. 2 1942 on his 17th birthday, and served as a Torpedoman on board Destroyer Escorts Numbers 252 and 224, until he was honorably discharged in 1946.
During the war, “Wally” met and married the love of his life, Margaret “Tubby” Rees, on March 9, 1946. They lived in Philadelphia and Bucks County where they raised five children, Walter L., Robert L., Charlene A., Ronald F., and Charles E. Dusablon.
Wally owned his own machine business for 20 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus - 4th degree, was active in the local V.F.W. and American Legion. He served as Skipper of the Philadelphia chapter of the Destroyer Escort Sailor’s Association (DESA) from 1997 – 2003. Wally was a Communicant of St. Cyril of Jerusalem, as well as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister.
Wally’s family was always his first priority, and he never met a stranger that didn’t become his friend. He loved people in general, many of whom became like family to him. Wally was a football fan since he played on a 7-man football team in high school because his school was too small to field a full 11-man team. He was an Eagles fan all the way back to 1960 when he attended the championship game at Franklin Field when the Eagles defeated the Green Bay Packers. Wally played hockey all through his youth, and was a big Flyers fan. He also was there when the flyers won the first Stanley cup, He was also a race car fan. In his youth he worked on several racecars that competed on local dirt tracks. Wally loved to take his family to Langhorn Speedway to watch early Indianapolis and NASCAR races. Later he enjoyed attending races live and watching them on TV. He was an avid swimmer, and spent summers in his youth swimming in Lake Champlain. Later he enjoyed swimming in his own pool.
Wally will be missed for his quick smile, his warmth and generosity, and for his stories about the war, pool parties, family vacations, etc. Wally never said “I can’t do that.” In spite of no previous experience, he built the house his family grew up in doing all the electrical, plumbing, masonry, carpentry and roofing on his own, and later used that experience to build a second home in the Pocono mountains for his family to enjoy for recreation. Wally never refused an invitation to eat at the Eagle Diner where everyone there, including the owner, knew Wally.
