Obituary of Joseph M. Lightkep

Joseph M. Lightkep of Hatboro, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 26th. Joe was born in Barren Hill to Archie and Elizabeth Meyers Lightkep. Joe and his siblings were raised in the Tree House of Andorra Nursery (Fairmount Park), sparking his lifelong love of working with dwarf conifers.

After graduating from Springfield High School, he married the love of his life, Kathleen Murphy and they enjoyed more than 60 years of marriage before her passing in 2018.

Joe served in the Army for several years before starting work for Lawn and Golf Supply Company, travelling to local courses selling equipment. He enjoyed golfing and trapping, and visiting the various courses exposed him to both opportunities.

As an accomplished horticulturist, Joe especially enjoyed working with dwarf conifers creating beautiful bonsai. His yard was full of carefully planted and pruned specimens. Additionally, Joe enjoyed surf fishing at the Jersey shore and the company of his favorite dog.

In recent years, Joe and his late wife Kathleen were lovingly cared for at home by their son Stephen.

Joe is survived by his two sons, Joseph (Leanne) and Stephen, as well as his son-in-law Gerald Montella. He is also survived by his grandchildren Melissa (Drew), Michael, and Elizabeth (Austin). He was predeceased by his wife Kathleen (nee Murphy), daughters Susan and Colleen, as well as his sisters Judy, Joan, and Audrey and his brother Bob.

Due to safety concerns with the current weather, Joe’s service will be held at a later date. Please check the Plunkett  Funeral Home Obituaries on this website, later in February, for an update.
