Obituary of Thomas J McMahon

Thomas J. McMahon Jr. was born on May 19, 1947 in Philadelphia, PA to parents Thomas and Jane McMahon. He graduated from William Tennent High school in Warminster, PA where he was a varsity football player and member of the wrestling team, having reached the state finals in wrestling. Thomas then was enlisted in the United States Army in 1967, proudly serving his country for three years while volunteering for a second tour of active-combat duty in Vietnam, earning a Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal with one Silver and two Bronze Stars, Army Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Air Medal with “V” Device and one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Aircraft Crewman Badge, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with “60” Device, among other commendations as Private First Class and Specialist 5 rank in the 114th Aviation Company. Upon honorably concluding his tours of duty in the armed forces, Thomas achieved his Bachelor’s degree in Criminology with a minor in Psychology from Trenton State College while beginning his career with the Warminster Township Police. He completed 39 years of service on the force, earning numerous commendations and holding the positions of Patrolman, Sergeant, and Sergeant-Detective. In addition to these titles he was a K-9 unit officer, a hostage negotiator with the Central Bucks Special Response Team, and a certified firearms instructor. He further served his fellow officers as both Vice President and President of the Police Benevolent Association for many years and was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Thomas possessed a life-long commitment to helping his fellow man and making his community a safer, better place. In addition to his decorated career in law enforcement, Thomas spent many years coaching and volunteering with youth sports, serving as President of the Upper Moreland Soccer Club and President of Inter-County Soccer League among other positions held within these organizations across a period of time spanning multiple decades. Thomas was also an avid outdoorsman, a hunting safety education instructor, and a member of the Black Creek Hunting and Fishing club for 21 years, serving as Treasurer of the organization. He shared his love of nature, wildlife, and traditions with his family and friends throughout his life. Thomas was a brave and noble individual who consistently gave back to his family and community, and he did so with a warm sense of humor and a kind and generous spirit. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Tina (Van Reymersdal) McMahon, his mother, Jane A. (Fletcher) McMahon, his children: Brigitte D. McMahon-Naglee & husband Frank Naglee, Kristin McMahon-Roba & husband Joseph Roba, daughter Kelly McMahon, and son Thomas J. McMahon III, his three sisters: Suzanne Thomas, Denise Mee, and Janie Szerlag, his brother William McMahon, his grandchildren: Jackson P. Roba and Cole P. Roba, as well as his many other beloved family members, friends, and fellow public servants. He is preceded by his father, Thomas J. McMahon Sr. A public viewing is being held Sunday, November 15, 2015 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, with formal services to honor him at 7:00 PMat Plunkett Funeral Home located at 529 N. York Road in Hatboro, PA. A burial with full military honors at Washington Crossing National Cemetery is to follow on Monday, November 16 at 10:00 AM, located at 830 Highland Road in Newtown, PA. Attendees of the burial ceremony are asked to arrive promptly at 9:40 PM in order to travel to the burial site within the National Cemetery grounds.
